The antibiotic therapy is an important part of care in all medical specialities. That's why it is necessary to know the general principles. The treatment should be efficient enough, but targeted at the same time. It's essential to think about risks of developing bacterial resistence. This algorithm will lead you through case of a concrete patient, from indication of the therapy to the solution of complications.
Review
Inclusion of interactive algorithm "Rational antibiotic therapy" for teaching in the context of emergency conditions is very beneficial. The important steps are outlined as follows: correct diagnostic procedure in suspected sepsis, emphasis on timely collection of clinical material samples and immediate administration of antibiotics. The algorithm highlights the importance of a timely and judicious choice of antibiotics with narrow spectrum of activity in the community acquired infection that produces less selection pressure for the emergence of antibiotic resistance than broad-spectrum antibiotics. The other steps are not forgotten; even today is relatively frequently presented severe complication of treatment with antibiotics - pseudomembranous colitis caused by toxigenous strain of Clostridium difficile. The algorithm shows the correct diagnostic procedure when suspecting this disease and choice of appropriate therapy.
