Meningococcal sepsis, meningococcal meningitis and sepsis combinated with menigitis are caused by gram negative diplococcus Neisseria meningitidis and are understood under exression invasive meningococcal disease. Appreciable part of population are healthy carriers of this microbe. On the other hand it can cause fulminant and often fatal disease. Algorithm shows a typical case of IMD and the most important principles of its treatment.
Review
Invasive meningococcal disease (IMD) is a serious infectious disease affecting especially young people. It is associated with a high mortality rate. In the initial phase of IMD symptoms are not specific and the most serious forms are quickly progressing. That is why early diagnostics and energetic treatment, starting in the prehospital care ideally, play a crucial role. Algorithm describes particular steps of rapid diagnostics and treatment including supportive therapy, which are essential for positive outcome of a patient. It presents the main principles of diagnostics and treatment of IMD.
